KuroMS Troubleshooting Guide Last Updated: March 27, 2026 A note before troubleshooting: Some antivirus software may flag the KuroMS client or DLL files as suspicious. This is completely normal for MapleStory private servers. The client we use is unpacked to work on our own network, which breaks Nexon's original digital signature and triggers false positives. Please add the entire KuroMS folder to your antivirus exclusion list before anything else. If your issue is not listed here, please ask in Discord or create a post on the forum. 1. Installation & Launcher 1.1 Game files disappearing or Kuro.exe deleted after download Cause: Your antivirus or Windows Defender is removing game files. Solution: Disable Windows Defender temporarily (Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings > Real-time Protection off) Add the entire KuroMS folder to your exclusions list (Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings > Add or Remove Exclusions > Add the full KuroMS folder) Re-download from playkuro.com/download Turn Windows Defender back on after adding the exclusion 1.2 Launcher says .NET runtime is required Cause: Missing system requirement. Solution: Download and install the .NET Desktop Runtime from Microsoft's official site . Make sure you install the Desktop Runtime, not just the regular runtime. 1.3 Launcher fails to patch or shows "Update Process Failed" Cause: Antivirus interference, corrupted files, or network issues. Solution: Ensure your antivirus is excluding the entire KuroMS folder Close all game clients before patching Try running the launcher as administrator If patching continues to fail, delete your game files and re-download the full package from playkuro.com/download 1.4 Nothing happens when I press Play in the launcher Cause: Permission issues, antivirus blocking execution, or path problems. Solution: Run the launcher as administrator Ensure your antivirus is not blocking Kuro.exe Make sure your KuroMS folder path does not contain special characters or non-English characters (use something like C:\KuroMS, not C:\ゲーム\KuroMS) Try disabling any third-party game launchers running in the background (Steam, Riot Vanguard, etc.) as their anti-cheat systems can interfere 2. Client Errors 2.1 MSVCRXXX.dll or MSVCPXXX.dll not found / Error 0x000007b / Error 0xc000007b Cause: Missing Visual C++ Runtime libraries. Solution: Download and install the Visual C++ Redistributable All-in-One package from TechPowerUp . Extract the files into a folder and run install_all.bat. 2.2 d3dx9_xx.dll not found or DirectX-related error Cause: Missing DirectX runtime libraries. Solution: Download and install the DirectX End-User Runtime from Microsoft's official site . 2.3 "Unspecified Error" or "Invalid Pointer" or Error -2147467261 Cause: Monitor refresh rate or resolution mismatch. Solution: Ensure your monitor refresh rate is at least 60Hz (Right-click desktop > Display Settings > Advanced Display Settings) Try setting your monitor resolution to a standard 16:9 ratio (e.g. 1920x1080) Right-click Kuro.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Run in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or Windows XP 2.4 Strange symbols or characters appear in-game / crashes with 0x008 error Cause: System locale is not set to English. Solution: Open Windows Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Administrative language settings > Change system locale Set it to English (United States) UNCHECK the "Use Unicode UTF-8" box Restart your computer Also ensure your KuroMS folder path contains only English characters 2.5 Client opens briefly then closes / crashes before login screen Cause: Multiple possible causes. Solution: Ensure antivirus is excluding the KuroMS folder Close any conflicting programs (other games with anti-cheat, Steam, Discord overlay) Run the launcher to verify and re-download any missing files Try running Kuro.exe in compatibility mode (Right-click > Properties > Compatibility > Windows 7 or Windows XP) If using NVIDIA: open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Add Kuro.exe > Set Image Scaling and enable GPU scaling 2.6 Game crashes after character select Cause: Viewport rendering issues with certain GPU or monitor configurations. Solution: Open the KuroMS Launcher Look for the Viewports option and disable it Relaunch the game 2.7 Client crashes after anti-cheat check Cause: The KuroMS anti-cheat system detected a blacklisted program running on your machine. Solution: Close any programs that could be flagged (cheat engines, debuggers, memory editors, packet sniffers) Close any overlay software that injects into game processes Restart your computer and try again If you believe this is a false positive, reach out to staff on Discord 3. Performance Issues 3.1 FPS drops when using skills Cause: Can be related to Discord integration, GPU settings, or packet load. Solution: Open your config.ini file in the KuroMS folder and set enableDiscord=false Ensure your GPU drivers are fully updated If using NVIDIA: open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings and reset to default Make sure the game folder is on an SSD, not an external drive or HDD Try lowering your resolution temporarily to test if it improves 3.2 Long loading times on login or character select Cause: Network routing, drive speed, or first-time load caching. Solution: The first login or channel change may take longer than usual as the client caches data — this is normal Ensure the game is NOT running from an external drive or cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.) Check your internet speed at fast.com — slow connections can cause long loads Try restarting your PC if character select hangs for more than 2 minutes 3.3 General lag or frequent disconnections Cause: Network issues, often related to routing from overseas. Solution: Check your internet speed at fast.com Try using a VPN — ProtonVPN (free) or NordVPN have been known to help. Try connecting to a region closer to the server Try using Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) Flush your DNS (open Command Prompt as admin and run: ipconfig /flushdns) Update your Windows and GPU drivers 3.4 Game freezes entirely or desktop freezes Cause: Driver issues, file corruption, or background interference. Solution: Update Windows and GPU drivers, then restart your PC Re-download fresh game files from playkuro.com/download Run the game as administrator Ensure system locale is set to English (US) Ensure your game directory path has no special or non-English characters Ensure your desktop background is not set to slideshow mode (use a static image) 4. In-Game Issues 4.1 Widget not opening or widget features not working Cause: Overlay software interference or corrupted settings. Solution: Close MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, or any other overlay software Close third-party game launchers (Steam overlay, Discord overlay) Close the game, run RUN_FIXES.reg as administrator from your KuroMS folder, then restart your PC and relaunch 4.2 Skills not working or pet auto-pot/loot not functioning Cause: Registry or config mismatch. Solution: Close the game completely Open your KuroMS folder and run RUN_FIXES.reg as administrator Restart your computer Run the launcher to verify files, then relaunch 4.3 Game crashes when opening inventory Cause: Registry mismatch with the client. Solution: Close the game completely Open your KuroMS folder and run RUN_FIXES.reg as administrator Restart your computer Relaunch the game 4.4 Screen stretching or game looks too large Cause: High DPI scaling settings. Solution: Right-click Kuro.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Change high DPI settings > Check "Override high DPI scaling behavior" and set the dropdown to "Application". Click OK and restart the client. 4.5 Cannot connect to the server Cause: Server may be down, or network issue on your end. Solution: Check playkuro.com or Discord to confirm the server is online Ensure you are connected to the internet Try using Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) Try using a VPN (ProtonVPN is free and works well) Unplug your router for 2 minutes, then plug it back in and try again 5. Controller Support MapleStory does not natively support controllers. To use a controller with KuroMS, you will need external software called Joy2Key. Download it from joytokey.net Setup: Launch Joy2Key Press controller buttons and assign them to the keyboard keys you want Launch KuroMS 6. Still Need Help?
