KuroMS FAQ
Quick answers to what new players ask most about KuroMS, the free classic v83 private server: price and pay-to-win, rates, version and classes, playing in a browser, on a phone or with the Windows launcher, accounts, Discord, voting, languages, rules and bug reports.
The basics
What is KuroMS?
KuroMS (Kuro for short) is a free classic v83 private server with Pre-Big Bang gameplay: the old classes, party quests, the Free Market and slow, social leveling, plus quality-of-life upgrades. It is an independent, community-run project, not affiliated with any game publisher, and it officially launched on July 18, 2026 after an alpha and two beta phases.
Is KuroMS free to play?
Yes. There is no subscription and nothing to buy to progress, and you can play everything without paying, in the browser or with the Windows launcher. Donations are optional and support the server.
Is KuroMS pay-to-win?
No. Levels, gear and boss clears come from playing. Donations give Donation Points for permanent Cash Shop items and cosmetics, an optional name tag color and effect, and an optional Supporter role on Discord. They give no levels, gear or boss clears, there is no paid early access, and donation mounts move at the same speed as the regular mounts. The full list is in pre-Big Bang and pay to win.
What are the rates?
2x EXP until level 200, then 1x; 1x meso; 1x drop; 3x quest EXP; and 4x EXP for characters below your account's highest level, so alts catch up fast. The level cap is 300 for every class, Cygnus Knights included. Rates stay close to the original so the economy and the Free Market keep their value. See features and rates.
Which version is it? Is it pre-Big Bang?
Yes. Kuro is built on v83, a client version from the classic pre-Big Bang era, before the Big Bang update first released in 2010. It is a modernized pre-BB experience rather than a pure recreation: you can attack while moving and jumping, every character can double jump, and fast travel is easier. The pre-Big Bang guide explains the terms.
Which classes can I play?
At character creation you pick an Explorer (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief or Pirate, every branch), a Cygnus Knight or Aran. A Beginner Explorer can also become a Dual Blade, Pathfinder, Cannoneer, Phantom, Shade or Mercedes at level 10 by talking to that class's NPC, or a Luminous at level 8. 2nd, 3rd and 4th job are automatic at levels 30, 70 and 120. Every class is in the classes guide.
Playing: browser, phone, Mac and launcher
Do I need to download anything?
No. Open play.playkuro.com and sign in: there is no manual client download and no installer, and the game loads its data in the browser as you play. On Windows you can also use the launcher if you prefer a desktop client.
Can I play on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The browser client runs on Android phones, iPhone, iPad and Android tablets with on-screen controls: a stick, ATK, JUMP, LOOT and TALK buttons and hotkey pages. Play in landscape; on iPhone, use Add to Home Screen for full screen. Details are in play in your browser.
Can I play on a Mac, Linux, a Chromebook or a Steam Deck?
Yes, in an up-to-date browser, and players already play on all of them. There is no macOS launcher, and you do not need Wine, CrossOver or Boot Camp. See play on a Mac.
Where do I get the Windows launcher, and how big is it?
On the download page. The launcher (kuro-launcher.exe) is about 10 MB. On first start it downloads about 10 GB of game files and keeps them up to date, then opens the Kuro desktop client. The minimum is Windows 7 with 12 GB of free space; the getting started guide has the full requirements.
My antivirus flagged the client. Is that normal?
Kuro's setup guide says some antivirus software may flag the client, that this is a false positive, and that you can add Kuro to your antivirus exceptions. Only download the launcher from playkuro.com. If you would rather not add an exception, play in the browser, which needs no antivirus exceptions. More in is KuroMS safe and legit?
Is the browser version the same server as the launcher?
Yes. Same server, same world, same account and characters. Play any character in the browser, create new ones there, and switch to the launcher whenever you like.
Account, Discord and rewards
How do I create an account?
Register on playkuro.com: it takes about a minute and costs nothing. You need a username, a valid email and a password. One account works for the game (browser and launcher), the website and the forum.
Can I have more than one account?
No: one account per person. Extra characters go on that one account instead. New accounts start with 3 character slots and can get more from the Cash Shop, up to 30, and characters below your account's highest level get 4x EXP.
How do I join the Discord?
The Discord is for registered players. Create a free account, log in, then choose Connect with Discord on your dashboard and authorize. The Member role is granted instantly and the full server opens up. The steps are on the Discord access page.
How do voting and vote rewards work?
You can vote up to 3 times a day on the vote page. Each vote gives 2,000 Reward Credits and 1 Vote Point. You need at least one character, and you claim the rewards in game by typing @vote. Reward Credits pay for the Cash Shop, apart from the Donation Point-only cosmetics, and the daily login rewards give more of them.
Which languages does Kuro support?
The game is primarily in English, with Japanese text in some interfaces, and you can type Japanese and Chinese characters in game. The guides are in English and Japanese, and the website also comes in Simplified Chinese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Hebrew. The English to Japanese glossary maps the English in-game names to the names Japanese players know.
What time zone does the server use?
Server time is JST (UTC+9). The daily login rewards advance at midnight server time, and boss and run resets are given in JST.
Has the server been wiped?
Wipes were part of the beta: Beta Phase 2 started with a full wipe on April 29, 2026, and purchases made during the beta carried over to launch. Kuro officially launched on July 18, 2026. Patch notes, maintenance notices and other official updates are posted in the forum Announcements.
Rules, help and bug reports
What are the main rules?
One account per person. Botting, macros, reverse engineering and exploiting bugs are bannable, and hiding a bug or exploit counts as abusing it. You accept the Kuro Terms of Service when you register, so read them for the full rules.
How do I report a bug?
Post it in the Bug Reports section of the forum, or report it to staff on Discord. Report exploits too: hiding one counts as abusing it. Bug reports and suggestions shaped Kuro through the beta, and they still do.
Where can I get help with the launcher or connection problems?
The forum's Technical Support section covers the launcher, browser play, connection problems and error codes, and the community helps on Discord. If the launcher gives you trouble, you can always play in the browser instead.
Is there an Ironman mode?
Yes. Ironman Mode is one of Kuro's features, with Solo Ironman and Group Ironman, and the rankings list top players by level, class, Ironman and Hardcore.
How many people play?
Kuro's homepage puts it at 900+ players every day. You can also see who is active on the live rankings and the Free Market search, which lists every open player shop.
