Classes on Kuro: every class and how to pick one
Every class you can play on KuroMS, the free classic v83 private server: the Explorers, Cygnus Knights and Aran at character creation, plus Dual Blade, Pathfinder, Cannoneer, Phantom, Shade, Mercedes and Luminous, unlocked early on. How each one starts, what it fights with and where to find its skill changes.
How classes work on Kuro
- At character creation you pick an Explorer, a Cygnus Knight or Aran.
- Unlocked from a Beginner Explorer: Dual Blade, Pathfinder, Cannoneer, Phantom, Shade and Mercedes at level 10 by talking to that class's NPC before your 1st job, and Luminous at level 8 with Vieren in the Magic Library (Ellinia). The change is permanent.
- Job advancement: 1st job is at an instructor NPC (level 10, or level 8 for Magicians). 2nd, 3rd and 4th job are automatic at levels 30, 70 and 120.
- Level cap 300 for every class, Cygnus Knights included.
- What every class gets: Double Jump, a 5% baseline critical chance on classic physical attacks, a unique party skill, and Hyper Skills with an active Hyper III final attack.
- Class | How you get it | Fights with
- Explorers | Character creation | Five branches, see below
- Cygnus Knights | Character creation | Five knights, see below

Explorers
The five classic branches, each with its own job paths. Warriors, Bowmen, Thieves and Pirates take their 1st job at level 10 and Magicians at level 8. The in-game names are English; the English to Japanese glossary has every job name side by side.
- Branch | Job paths (2nd, 3rd, 4th job)
- Warrior | Fighter, Crusader, Hero; Page, White Knight, Paladin; Spearman, Dragon Knight, Dark Knight
- Magician | Fire/Poison Wizard, Mage, Arch Mage; Ice/Lightning Wizard, Mage, Arch Mage; Cleric, Priest, Bishop
- Bowman | Hunter, Ranger, Bowmaster (bow); Crossbowman, Sniper, Marksman (crossbow)
- Thief | Assassin, Hermit, Night Lord (claw); Bandit, Chief Bandit, Shadower (dagger)
- Pirate | Brawler, Marauder, Buccaneer (knuckle); Gunslinger, Outlaw, Corsair (gun)
- Warriors: Kuro reworked the Warrior weapon formulas and 4th job attacks such as Primal Shout (Hero), Heaven's Hammer (Paladin) and Gungnir's Descent (Dark Knight).
- Magicians: the Mage formula was reworked to keep Magicians competitive, and Flame Haze is a reworked Fire/Poison Arch Mage attack. The Bishop's Epic Adventure gives +1% final damage per level for yourself (+10% at max).
- Thieves: the Shadower's Phantom Blow is one of the reworked 4th job attacks.
- Pirates: every Pirate gets Roll of the Dice.
Cygnus Knights
The knight order of Ereve, picked at character creation. Every knight starts as a Noblesse, which on Kuro has Chair Mastery to recover extra HP and MP while resting on map chairs, and Cygnus Knights share the level cap of 300 with every other class.
- Dawn Warrior: the sword-using knight.
- Blaze Wizard: the fire magician.
- Wind Archer: the bow user.
- Night Walker: the throwing-star thief.
- Thunder Breaker: the knuckle pirate.
Aran
The polearm hero, picked at character creation, who fights with combo attacks. Aran was part of the October 16, 2026 balance pass.
Dual Blade, Pathfinder and Cannoneer
- Dual Blade: any Beginner at level 10 can talk to Lady Syl and take the oath. A dagger in the main hand, a katara in the off hand and plenty of mobility. Kuro's Dual Blade has four stages: Blade Recruit, Blade Acolyte, Blade Lord and Blade Master.
- Pathfinder: an Ancient Bow class built around a Relic Gauge that feeds on aggression and a Cardinal kit that hits hard. Keep attacking, because the gauge drains when you stop.
- Cannoneer: talk to Captain Cannoneer in the Nautilus Navigation Room at level 10. Cannoneers fight with cannons and DEX, follow the Pirate quest paths, and a Crocell trial skips you to level 20.
Phantom, Shade, Mercedes and Luminous
- Phantom: the master thief who borrows the best skills of every Explorer: copy up to four Explorer skills with Impeccable Memory. Phantoms fight with daggers, and every dagger has a cane twin with the same stats. Beating Valefor before level 20 takes you straight to level 20.
- Shade: a knuckle-fighting hero who punches with a spirit fox and uses STR. Spirit Claw is the 12-line bossing tool, Bomb Punch clears mobs, Death Mark summons a spirit that hunts everything near you, and Spirit Trap holds bosses in place. Beginner Shades start in Nautilus Harbor.
- Mercedes: the elven archer, with a bow or a crossbow and DEX. Her skill attacks never miss and need no arrows. Beating Amdusias before level 20 takes you straight to level 20.
- Luminous: the mage of light and darkness, with wands, staves or Shining Rods and INT. There is no Light / Dark gauge on Kuro, so every skill is always available. From 3rd job, Equilibrium Liberation gives the Luminous and party members on the same map +10% EXP from 00:00 to 12:00 JST and +10% drop rate from 12:00 to 24:00 JST. In the staff damage test, a Luminous dealt about as much as a Bishop.
Echo of Hero for the newer classes: At level 200 and above, Dual Blade, Cannoneer, Shade, Phantom, Mercedes and Luminous can get Echo of Hero from the Statue of Goddess in Orbis.
Which class is best?
Kuro's class design aims for balanced classes with a unique party skill for every class, and the October 16 and October 26, 2026 balance passes retuned main attacks. So pick the playstyle you enjoy most:
- Classic nostalgia: an Explorer, the way the old game played, with every branch available.
- Party support: a Luminous buffs the party's EXP and drop rate, and every Pirate rolls the dice.
- Never miss a hit: Mercedes, whose skill attacks always land.
- A bit of every class: Phantom, who copies Explorer skills.
- Speed and mobility: Dual Blade.
Trying a second class is quick: Characters below your account's highest level get 4x EXP, so a second class catches up fast. Not sure yet? Make an Explorer: as a Beginner it can still become any of the unlockable classes at level 10 (Luminous from level 8), as long as it has not taken its 1st job.
Skill changes by class
The Skill Changes page lists every skill Kuro has changed, by class and job, compared with the original v83 values, generated from the game's own skill data. Dual Blade and Pathfinder sit inside the Thieves and Archers groups. Cannoneer, Phantom, Mercedes, Shade and Luminous are not on that page yet, so the skill changes guide and the patch notes in the forum Announcements cover them.
