A dated comparison of seven classic private servers in 2026: Kuro, MapleRoyals, MapleLegends, SlimeTale, Dream MS, Kaizen and YunaMS, by version, rates, platforms and public activity indicators, with a source link for every server. Updated October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Looking for a classic private server in 2026? This page puts seven of them side by side, with a date on every figure and a link to every source.

They are Kuro, MapleRoyals, MapleLegends, SlimeTale, Dream MS, Kaizen and YunaMS. How we chose them is explained in the next section.

Who wrote this: This page is written by the Kuro team, so read our own entry with that in mind. Facts about the other servers come from their own websites or public toplists, checked on October 8, 2026, and each server section links its sources. Kuro did not accept payment for including any server. When we could not find something, we say "not found in the sources checked" instead of guessing.

How we chose and compared

  • How we chose the servers: Kuro plus six servers that are pre-Big Bang, low or mid rate (under 10x base EXP), have an English website and were listed on gtop100 on October 8, 2026. Five come from the gtop100 top 12 (MapleRoyals, Dream MS, MapleLegends, SlimeTale and Kaizen), and YunaMS (#42 on gtop100) was added for its Discord activity on nostalgic.gg. This is a selection, not a complete list: other servers that fit, such as Fantasia (v62, #7 on gtop100 when we checked), are not covered in this edition.
  • Version: the client version the server is built on. v62 and v72 are earlier eras, v83 is the middle of the classic period, and v92 is late pre-Big Bang.
  • Rates: EXP, meso and drop multipliers exactly as each server publishes them. Some use custom curves or drop tables instead of one number.
  • Opened: when the server says it launched. Toplist "added" dates are not launch dates, so we do not use them.
  • Platforms: how each server says you can play.
  • Public activity indicators: the gtop100 rank, the average population band shown on each gtop100 listing, and the nostalgic.gg Discord activity figure, all read within the same two minutes. They are separate signals in different units, so we never add them up or turn them into a player count. Details are in the public activity indicators section.

Comparison table

  • Server | Version | Rates (EXP / meso / drop) | Opened | Platforms
  • Kuro | v83 | 2x to level 200, then 1x / 1x / 1x, 3x quest EXP | July 2026 | Browser on desktop and phone; Windows launcher
  • MapleRoyals | v83 | 3.2x / increased / increased (exact values not found in the sources checked) | Over 10 years ago, by its own account | Windows
  • MapleLegends | v62 | 2x / 1x / no single rate (custom), 3x quest EXP | April 2015 | Windows; Mac and Linux with extra setup
  • SlimeTale | v72 | 3x / 2x / 1x, 4x quest EXP | July 2026 (beta) | Windows; Mac through a Windows virtual machine
  • Dream MS | v92 | 4x / 2x / custom, 5x quest EXP | May 2021 (current launch) | Windows launcher
  • Kaizen | v92 | Scales with level / not found in the sources checked / custom, 3x quest bonus | Not found in the sources checked | Windows; Mac through CrossOver or Wine
  • YunaMS | v83 | 3x (6x below level 100) / 3x / custom, 5x quest EXP | Not found in the sources checked | Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck

Rates, launch dates and platforms are as each server states them on the pages linked in its section below, checked on October 8, 2026. Activity figures are in the next section, kept apart because they measure different things.

Public activity indicators

All figures below were read on October 8, 2026, between 07:26 and 07:27 UTC, for all seven servers in one sitting. They are not player counts.

  • Server | gtop100 rank | gtop100 average population band | nostalgic.gg Discord activity
  • MapleRoyals | #1 | 1,000 to 2,000 | 2,980
  • Dream MS | #3 | 500 to 1,000 | 0 shown
  • MapleLegends | #4 | 1,000 to 2,000 | 3,256
  • SlimeTale | #8 | 100 to 500 | 166
  • Kaizen | #11 | 500 to 1,000 | 0 shown
  • Kuro | #12 | 500 to 1,000 | 1,194
  • YunaMS | #42 | 100 to 500 | 680
  • gtop100 rank is the position on the main gtop100 list, which ranks servers by player votes (about gtop100). A higher rank means more voting activity, not more players online.
  • gtop100 average population band is the range printed on each server's gtop100 listing. gtop100 does not explain on its about page how the band is set, so treat it as a rough range.
  • nostalgic.gg Discord activity comes from the nostalgic.gg directory (page last updated 06:31 UTC that day). nostalgic.gg itself says Discord activity describes a community, not concurrent players in the game. It showed 0 for Dream MS and Kaizen; we do not know why, so do not read that as an empty community.

Online counters the servers publish

Some servers show a live counter on their own website. Counter definitions may differ and have not been independently audited, so they are listed here on their own and not compared or ranked. All were read between 07:28:18 and 07:28:22 UTC on October 8, 2026; time of day may affect readings.

  • Kuro: 446 concurrent characters, from Kuro's server status feed at 07:28:18 UTC.
  • MapleLegends: "Players Online: 1180 (559 unique)" on legends.ml at 07:28:19 UTC.
  • SlimeTale: "20 Players Online" on slimetale.ms at 07:28:19 UTC, shortly after midnight on its server clock.
  • Dream MS: "354 Players online now" on dreamms.gg at 07:28:20 UTC.
  • Kaizen: "188 Online" on kaizenms.net at 07:28:21 UTC.
  • MapleRoyals and YunaMS: no number was found in the pages checked (their sites load any counter with a script).

The servers in detail

Kuro

Kuro is a v83 server that opened on July 18, 2026. Rates are 2x EXP until level 200 (1x after that), 1x meso, 1x drop and 3x quest EXP, with the level cap raised to 300. The main way to play is the browser client at play.playkuro.com, with nothing to install; our download page lists desktop and phone. A Windows launcher is also available. It keeps the pre-Big Bang classes, party quests and Free Market, and adds Ironman, Hardcore and Group Ironman modes, item level-up, custom bosses, Vitality Potions that permanently raise Max HP and MP, and a free 7-day Hyper Teleport Rock for new characters. The game is primarily in English, with some Japanese interfaces. Kuro is free to play, with optional donations; donation mounts move at the same speed as the regular mounts every player can get. Being new, its community is younger than the decade-old servers, and its custom content means it is not a pure recreation.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #12 on gtop100 (average population band 500 to 1,000); 1,194 Discord activity on nostalgic.gg.

Best for (our opinion): playing in a browser with nothing to install, low rates with quality-of-life changes, and Ironman runs.

MapleRoyals

MapleRoyals says on its site that it has been open for over 10 years. It runs a v83 client (gtop100 tags it with both v83 and v62) with 3.2x EXP and "increased drop and meso rates"; the exact meso and drop multipliers were not found in the sources checked. Its site lists party bonus EXP, quest lines that replace HP washing, the Monster Book, imported areas such as Temple of Time and Ulu City, and 20 channels. Downloads are offered for Windows. Its gtop100 listing is tagged NoPay2Win.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #1 on gtop100 (average population band 1,000 to 2,000); 2,980 Discord activity on nostalgic.gg.

Best for (our opinion): an established v83 server with a long track record.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: royals.ms (its current site), downloads, gtop100 listing.

MapleLegends

MapleLegends has been running since April 2015 and recreates the 2008 era on v62. Its homepage lists 2x EXP, 1x meso and 3x quest EXP. It does not publish one drop rate: its features thread calls it akin to the original 1x but says custom item changes make a single number misleading. Classes are the five Explorer branches, Pirates included. Windows is supported natively, and the team publishes setup guides for Mac and Linux. Its gtop100 listing is tagged NoPay2Win.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #4 on gtop100 (average population band 1,000 to 2,000); 3,256 Discord activity on nostalgic.gg.

Best for (our opinion): a low-rate 2008-era grind on v62 with a long-running community.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: legends.ml (its current site), download page, features thread, gtop100 listing.

SlimeTale

SlimeTale is a v72 server whose beta opened on July 9, 2026. Rates are 3x EXP, 4x quest EXP, 2x meso and 1x drop. It includes 4th job, Pirates, Temple of Time and Pink Bean, disables HP washing in favor of alternate systems, and has an Ironman mode with its own rankings and anti-leech rules with bonus party EXP. The server says it has no pay-to-win, with optional donations. The client is Windows only; Mac players run it inside a Windows virtual machine, following the guide on its site.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #8 on gtop100 (average population band 100 to 500); 166 Discord activity on nostalgic.gg.

Best for (our opinion): players who want the v72 era specifically, on an actively patched new server.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: slimetale.ms, features page, Mac guide, gtop100 listing.

Dream MS

Dream MS describes itself as a challenging, low-rate v92 server that stays close to the original global version. Rates are 4x EXP, 2x meso, custom drops and 5x quest EXP. The level cap is raised to 300, with extra skills unlocking at levels 210, 225 and 240. Classes include Adventurers, Aran, Knights of Cygnus (with a custom 4th job), Dual Blade and Evan. The client offers resolutions up to 2560x1440, and the server says it has no pay-to-win or vote-to-win. Its current launch went live on May 22, 2021, according to the administrators' Go Live announcement. You play through a Windows launcher.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #3 on gtop100 (average population band 500 to 1,000); nostalgic.gg showed 0 Discord activity.

Best for (our opinion): late pre-Big Bang classes and expedition bossing on an established server.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: dreamms.gg, features thread, Go Live announcement, gtop100 listing.

Kaizen

Kaizen is a v92 pre-Big Bang server with Evan, Dual Blade, item potential, item sets and equipment enhancement. Instead of one flat rate, EXP scales up with level, plus a 3x quest bonus. The max level is 250, or 120 for Knights of Cygnus. It imports later bosses such as Von Leon, Hilla and Magnus. A launch date was not found in the sources checked. On Mac, its FAQ recommends CrossOver or Wine.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #11 on gtop100 (average population band 500 to 1,000); nostalgic.gg showed 0 Discord activity.

Best for (our opinion): v92 classes with a big boss roster and a level-scaled EXP curve.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: kaizenms.net, guide, download and FAQ, gtop100 listing.

YunaMS

YunaMS is a v83 server aimed at faster progression with a lot of custom content. Its homepage lists 3x EXP, 3x meso, custom drops, 5x quest EXP and 2x spawn, and its features page adds 6x EXP below level 100. The level cap is 300, with an Arcane River endgame and level milestone rewards. It disables HP washing and says it supports Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck. A launch date was not found in the sources checked.

Public activity indicators (October 8, 2026, 07:26 UTC): #42 on gtop100 (average population band 100 to 500); 680 Discord activity on nostalgic.gg.

Best for (our opinion): faster leveling and content past level 200 on a v83 base.

Sources, checked on October 8, 2026: yuna.ms, features page, gtop100 listing.

Which one should you pick? Our opinion

This part is opinion: The suggestions below are the Kuro team's opinion, based on the facts above. Kuro is one of the servers being compared.

  • Low rates close to the original: MapleLegends (v62, 2x EXP, 1x meso) or Kuro (v83, 2x EXP to level 200 then 1x, with 1x meso and drop, plus more custom content).
  • An established v83 server: MapleRoyals, #1 on the gtop100 vote ranking when we checked.
  • The v72 era: SlimeTale.
  • Aran, Evan and Dual Blade: Dream MS lists all three; Kaizen lists Evan and Dual Blade. Both are v92.
  • Faster progression and content past level 200: YunaMS, Dream MS (cap 300) or Kaizen (cap 250). Kuro also goes to 300 but keeps lower rates.
  • Playing in a browser, including on a phone: Kuro, the only one of these seven where we found a browser client.
  • Playing on a Mac: Kuro in a desktop browser, or YunaMS, which says it supports Mac. MapleLegends, Kaizen and SlimeTale publish setup guides or recommendations.
  • Ironman: Kuro (Ironman, Hardcore and Group Ironman) or SlimeTale (Ironman with rankings).
  • High rates: none of these seven is a high-rate server, Kuro included. If you want 100x and up, look at the high-rate categories on the toplists instead.

Trying two servers for a weekend is a good way to choose. If Kuro sounds right, the getting started guide covers your first hour, the download page has the browser link and the Windows launcher, and features and rates lists every system.

FAQ

What is the most popular classic private server in 2026?

It depends on the metric, and none of these public figures is a comparable, independently verified player count. On the gtop100 vote ranking at 07:26 UTC on October 8, 2026, MapleRoyals was #1 and MapleLegends #4, and both listings showed the 1,000 to 2,000 average population band. On nostalgic.gg at the same time, MapleLegends had the highest Discord activity of the seven servers here (3,256), ahead of MapleRoyals (2,980). These figures change every day, so check the toplists for current numbers.

Which classic private server can I play in a browser or on my phone?

Of the seven servers here, Kuro is the only one where we found a browser client. Open play.playkuro.com and log in with your Kuro account; see our download page for browser and Windows launcher entry points. The other six use a downloadable client, according to the sources we checked.

What do v62, v72, v83 and v92 mean?

They are the client version a server is built on, and each one matches a period of the original game. Lower numbers are earlier: MapleLegends uses v62 and SlimeTale v72; Kuro, MapleRoyals and YunaMS use v83; Dream MS and Kaizen use v92, and on those two servers that brings classes such as Evan and Dual Blade, plus Aran on Dream MS.

Are these servers pay to win?

Kuro is free to play, with optional donations. Donation mounts move at the same speed as the regular mounts every player can get. For the others, we only report what each server says: SlimeTale says it has no pay-to-win and that donations are optional, Dream MS says it has no pay-to-win or vote-to-win, and the gtop100 listings of MapleRoyals and MapleLegends are tagged NoPay2Win. For Kaizen and YunaMS, a statement was not found in the sources checked. For any server, read its donation or shop page before you invest a lot of time.

What are Kuro's rates?

2x EXP until level 200 and 1x after that, 1x meso, 1x drop and 3x quest EXP, with a level cap of 300 for every class. Characters below your account's highest level get 4x EXP. The features and rates guide lists every system.

Can I play a classic private server on a Mac?

There are several ways. Kuro can be played in a desktop browser, so there is no client to install; see our download page for browser and Windows launcher entry points. YunaMS says it supports Mac, Linux and Steam Deck. MapleLegends says its client is Mac compatible for most macOS versions and publishes setup guides, Kaizen recommends CrossOver or Wine, and SlimeTale recommends a Windows virtual machine.

Is this comparison biased?

It is written by the Kuro team, so read it with that in mind. To keep it checkable, every figure has a date and time, every server section links the sources we used, and anything we could not find is marked as not found instead of guessed. The "Which one should you pick" section is our opinion. If you run one of these servers and something is out of date, tell us on Discord and we will fix it.
